What Should I Do If My Total Debts Exceed My Monthly Income?

If my debt repayments no longer fit into my income, I do not solve the problem by immediately taking another loan. I first work out whether I have a temporary cash-flow shortage or a genuine over-indebtedness problem, then deal with the existing debts in a structured way.

First question: what exceeds my income? Total debt balance and monthly debt repayments are not the same thing.
Income I use reliable take-home income, not gross salary.
Essentials I protect basic living costs before planning debt repayments.
Creditors I contact them early instead of ignoring notices.
Debt review If the numbers still do not work, I consider formal help.
First check

I First Check Whether I Actually Have an Income Problem

If my total outstanding debt is bigger than one month's salary, that alone does not mean I am over-indebted. A home loan or vehicle-finance balance can easily be many times my monthly income.

The real warning sign is when my monthly living costs plus required debt repayments are more than my reliable monthly income, or when I have to borrow again just to keep existing accounts current.

The number I care about: after paying normal essential expenses, is there enough money left to meet all agreed monthly debt repayments?
Build the real picture

I Put Every Debt and Expense in One Place

If the answer is no, I stop looking for another quick loan first. New credit can temporarily cover one debit order, but it also creates a new repayment and may make the monthly gap worse.

I list reliable take-home income, then housing, food, electricity, transport, medical needs, insurance and other essentials. After that I list every credit agreement: lender, outstanding balance, instalment, payment date and whether the account is already in arrears.

I record
What I need
Why it matters
Income
Reliable monthly take-home income.
I do not build a repayment plan around uncertain overtime or bonuses.
Essentials
Housing, food, utilities, transport, medical and insurance.
These show how much money is realistically available for creditors.
Every debt
Provider, balance, instalment, due date and arrears.
I need the complete picture, not only the account causing the most pressure.
Monthly gap
Income minus essentials minus required repayments.
A negative result tells me the existing structure is not sustainable.
Contact creditors early

I Do Not Wait Until Every Account Is Deep in Arrears

If I cannot pay every creditor in full, I do not ignore calls, emails, letters or notices. I contact credit providers as early as possible, explain that my income no longer covers the agreed payments and ask what formal hardship, reduced-payment or restructuring options they can consider.

I keep copies of emails, reference numbers and any revised terms. I do not agree to a reduced payment simply because it sounds better if I already know that amount is still unaffordable.

I also separate a temporary shock from a permanent problem. If my income dropped for one or two months, direct negotiation may be enough. If my normal income is permanently below the amount needed for essentials and debts, I need a longer-term solution.

I do not simply stop paying everything. Different credit agreements can have different consequences and enforcement processes. I read notices and respond instead of avoiding them.
Debt counselling

If the Numbers Still Do Not Work, I Consider Formal Debt Review

If the problem is not temporary and there is no realistic way to meet all monthly obligations, I consider formal debt counselling, also called debt review.

The National Credit Regulator describes debt counselling as a debt relief measure under the National Credit Act for over-indebted consumers. A registered debt counsellor can assess income and expenses, provide budget advice and negotiate with credit providers about reduced payments and restructuring.

Assessment My full financial position

Income, expenses and debts are considered together rather than one account at a time.

Negotiation Creditors are approached

The debt counsellor can negotiate repayment proposals based on what I can afford.

Restructuring A formal repayment process

The aim is a repayment structure that can be maintained over time.

Debt counselling is not debt cancellation. I remain responsible for what I owe. It is also not a payment holiday, and interest does not automatically stop simply because I enter the process.

Before applying

I Check the Consequences Before Entering Debt Review

Debt counselling is a formal process, so I want to understand it before signing. There are debt-counselling and legal fees. I ask for the applicable fees in writing and make sure the process, payment structure and consequences are explained clearly.

Further credit I cannot simply borrow again

Consumers under debt counselling cannot obtain further credit while the applicable debt-review restrictions remain in place.

Credit bureau Debt-review indicator

A debt-counselling indicator can appear on my credit-bureau profile while I am under the process.

Interest It does not automatically stop

I do not enter debt review assuming the debt will freeze or disappear.

Fees I ask before signing

I want written disclosure of debt-counselling and relevant legal fees.

I also make sure I have distributable income. NCR guidance states that consumers entering debt counselling should have income available to offer reduced payments to creditors. If I have no money left at all after basic living costs, I disclose that honestly and ask what legally appropriate options exist.

Use a registered counsellor

I Verify the Debt Counsellor Before Giving Them My Information

Black couple reviewing financial documents and planning how to manage debt

I only use a debt counsellor registered with the National Credit Regulator. I verify the person or business in the NCR Register instead of trusting an unsolicited phone call or social-media advert.

I am especially cautious with promises to “write off” a fixed percentage of debt, guarantee large savings before an assessment, or give me a payment holiday. The NCR has warned consumers about misleading debt-review marketing.

Before applying, I prepare recent proof of income, bank statements, a realistic household budget, account statements and details of every creditor. The assessment is only useful if I disclose the complete financial picture.

Payments under debt review

I Check Where My Debt-Review Payments Are Going

NCR guidance explains that payments under debt counselling are distributed through accredited Payment Distribution Agencies. I do not simply pay money to a debt counsellor and assume it will reach every creditor.

If I enter the process, I request statements, check the distribution information and make sure the payments are reaching the correct credit providers. I keep my own records rather than relying on verbal confirmation.

Consolidation

I Do Not Assume Another Consolidation Loan Will Fix the Problem

A consolidation loan is not automatically the answer when my existing monthly obligations already exceed my income.

Consolidation only helps if I can responsibly qualify and the new agreement genuinely improves the position: fewer payments, an affordable instalment, clear fees and a total repayment I understand.

If I take a new loan to settle old loans while my normal monthly shortfall remains unchanged, I have moved the debt rather than solved the affordability problem.
Warning signs

Signs That Tell Me I Should Act Now

New borrowing I borrow to repay other debt

The new loan does not create income; it normally adds another obligation.

Essentials I use credit for groceries

Regular use of credit or overdraft for basic living costs is a serious cash-flow warning.

Missed accounts I pay one creditor and skip another

Rotating missed payments usually means the full debt structure no longer fits.

Legal notices Letters of demand are arriving

I do not leave notices unopened or assume they will disappear.

If legal notices or summonses have already arrived, I deal with them promptly. Timing can matter. I take the document to an appropriate registered debt counsellor or qualified legal professional rather than relying on social-media advice.

My order of action

The Practical Order I Would Follow

First, I calculate the real monthly shortfall. Second, I protect essential living costs. Third, I stop adding unnecessary new debt. Fourth, I contact creditors before the situation becomes worse.

If the monthly figures still cannot work, I speak to an NCR-registered debt counsellor and understand the formal debt-review process before signing anything.

The goal is not to make the debt look smaller on paper. The goal is to reach a repayment structure I can actually maintain while still paying for housing, food, transport and other normal living costs.

FAQ

Questions I Would Ask First

Does total debt greater than my salary mean I am over-indebted?

Not by itself. I focus on whether my normal monthly income can cover essential living costs and the required monthly debt repayments.

Should I take another loan to catch up?

Not automatically. If the underlying monthly shortfall remains, new borrowing can increase the problem rather than solve it.

What should I do before debt review?

I build a complete budget, contact creditors and then speak to a registered debt counsellor if the debts still cannot be serviced.

Does debt counselling write off my debts?

No. Debt counselling is a restructuring and debt-relief process. I remain responsible for repaying my debts.

Can I borrow while under debt review?

Consumers under debt counselling cannot simply obtain further credit while the applicable debt-review restrictions remain in place.

How do I know a debt counsellor is legitimate?

I check the counsellor in the National Credit Regulator's official Register of Registrants before providing sensitive information or signing.

If My Monthly Numbers Do Not Work, I Stop Treating It as a Loan Problem

When income cannot cover basic living costs and existing repayments, I treat the situation as a debt-structure problem. I calculate the shortfall, speak to creditors and use formal NCR-regulated help where necessary instead of adding another emergency loan.
