What Are Debt Counselling Services and How Do They Help With Heavy Arrears?

If my income no longer covers essential living costs and all required credit repayments, debt counselling gives me a formal NCA process for assessing and restructuring the existing debts.

Debt counselling deals with existing obligations It is a restructuring process, not a new loan and not automatic debt cancellation.
What it does

An NCR-registered debt counsellor assesses my income, reasonable living expenses and credit agreements. If I am over-indebted, the counsellor can prepare a restructuring proposal and deal with my creditors through the formal debt-review process. I remain responsible for repaying the debts.

When it is relevant

I Look at Affordability, Not Just the Size of the Arrears

One missed instalment does not necessarily require formal debt counselling. If the problem was temporary and I can realistically catch up, I first ask the affected credit provider about a short-term payment arrangement.

Debt counselling becomes more relevant when the problem is structural: several accounts are behind, I borrow to service existing credit, I regularly choose which creditor to skip, or my normal disposable income is no longer enough for the required instalments.

NCR guidance says applicants should have distributable income. This means there should normally be some money available after reasonable living expenses that can be distributed to creditors under a restructured plan.

If nothing remains after essential expenses, I disclose that accurately. I do not invent income or reduce genuine living costs simply to make a restructuring proposal appear affordable.
Information required

What I Prepare Before the Assessment

Income Reliable monthly income

Recent salary, pension or other dependable income information.

Budget Real household expenses

Housing, food, transport, utilities, insurance, medical costs and other necessary expenses.

Debts Every credit agreement

Loans, cards, store accounts, vehicle finance, home loans and other relevant credit.

I also provide arrears figures, account statements and any legal notices already received. A counsellor needs the complete position because leaving out one creditor can distort the repayment calculation.

What the service should include

What a Registered Debt Counsellor Actually Does

Budget Calculate affordability

The counsellor determines what is realistically available after necessary household expenses.

Accounts Review the debts

Credit providers, balances and repayment obligations are brought into one assessment.

Status Assess over-indebtedness

The counsellor decides whether the current debt structure can be serviced as agreed.

Proposal Prepare restructuring

Available income is used to calculate a proposed repayment structure for qualifying agreements.

Creditors Handle formal communication

Credit providers are notified and the restructuring proposal is processed through the applicable NCA procedure.

Monitoring Track the process

The counsellor should keep me informed about restructuring, payments and eventual clearance.

The process

How Debt Counselling Usually Progresses

Application
I formally apply for debt review

The prescribed process includes a debt-review application and disclosure of my financial and creditor information.

Notification
Relevant parties are notified

The process includes notification to credit providers and credit bureaux that I have applied for debt review.

Assessment
My full budget is tested

Income, expenses and debt obligations are assessed to determine whether I am over-indebted.

Restructuring
A new repayment structure is proposed

The proposal can extend repayment periods and reduce scheduled instalments so they fit the available distributable income.

Formal order
The arrangement must be formalised

The restructuring proceeds through the applicable legal or consent-order process rather than remaining an informal promise.

Repayment
I follow the approved plan

I make the required monthly payment and monitor distributions to the individual credit providers.

Heavy arrears

How Restructuring Helps When Several Accounts Are Behind

Heavy arrears usually mean I am dealing with different due dates, collection calls, arrears balances and demands from several creditors at the same time.

A formal debt-review assessment replaces that fragmented approach with one calculation of what my household can actually afford. Instead of agreeing separately to three or four instalments that do not fit my income, the proposal uses the available amount to create a coordinated repayment structure.

Lower monthly repayments can be achieved by changing the repayment structure or extending terms. I therefore check both the reduced monthly amount and the expected repayment period.

What changes

What Debt Counselling Does Not Automatically Do

Issue
What actually happens
What I check
Arrears
Existing arrears remain part of the debt being restructured.
I do not assume the overdue balance is written off.
Interest
Debt review does not automatically mean all interest stops.
I check how balances will change under the final arrangement.
Monthly payment
Scheduled repayments can be reduced through restructuring.
A lower payment can mean a longer repayment period.
New credit
NCR guidance says consumers cannot apply for further ordinary credit while under debt counselling.
I plan around existing income instead of expecting another loan.
Credit profile
The debt-review process is reflected on my credit-bureau profile.
Formal clearance is required when the applicable conditions have eventually been met.
Debt balance
Debt counselling restructures repayment rather than cancelling the debt.
I continue monitoring creditor statements and balances.
Payment distribution

I Check Who Receives My Monthly Payment

NCR guidance states that accredited Payment Distribution Agencies (PDAs) collect debt-review payments and distribute them to credit providers.

Debt counsellors are not supposed to collect and personally distribute the money intended for my creditors. Before making a monthly payment, I therefore confirm the PDA details.

Payment Keep proof every month

I retain payment confirmations so I can trace a distribution if a creditor says money was not received.

Statements Check the distribution

NCR guidance says consumers have the right to monthly distribution statements from the counsellor and PDA.

Fees

I Obtain the Full Fee Structure Before Applying

Debt counselling is not free. NCR guidance confirms that debt-counselling and legal fees can apply. Depending on the case, the overall process can also involve payment-distribution costs.

Before applying, I request written disclosure of the fees and ask when each amount will be charged. NCR specifically identifies advance disclosure of applicable fees as a consumer right.

I do not use a service that refuses to explain its charges, promises completely free debt review or asks me to transfer creditor repayments directly into the counsellor's personal account.

I Keep Loan Comparison Separate From Formal Debt Counselling

CreditNice states that it is an informational service that helps users compare third-party loan offers. It is not the lender and it is not the debt counsellor handling a formal debt-review application.

If I am already over-indebted, formal debt counselling should be dealt with through an NCR-registered debt counsellor. I do not take another loan simply to keep several unaffordable accounts temporarily current.

Legal action

I Do Not Wait Until Enforcement Is Advanced

Timing matters when arrears are already serious. If I have received a Section 129 notice, summons or repossession-related documents, I show them to the counsellor immediately.

The NCA restricts the use of debt review for agreements where the credit provider has already progressed to relevant enforcement steps. I therefore do not assume that starting a debt-review enquiry automatically stops an existing legal process.

Court papers and enforcement notices need immediate attention even if I am also speaking to a debt counsellor.
Choosing a service

I Verify the Counsellor Before Sharing Financial Documents

Black man reviewing and signing financial documents at a desk

Debt counsellors must be registered with the National Credit Regulator. I check the person's registration through the official NCR Register before sending ID documents, salary information or bank statements.

I ask for the counsellor's NCR registration number, written fees, contact details and an explanation of the restructuring and payment process.

I avoid services promising guaranteed debt cancellation, instant removal of a debt-review record, another loan while under debt review, or a fixed percentage reduction before they have assessed my accounts.

Consumer rights

What NCR Guidance Says I Am Entitled to Receive

Fees Written fee disclosure

I can request the applicable fees before submitting the application.

Process Full explanation

The implications and debt-counselling process should be explained before I apply.

Rejection Reasons if refused

NCR guidance says I can request reasons if a debt-counselling application is rejected.

Payments Monthly distribution statements

I can monitor how payments are allocated to my credit providers.

FAQ

Questions I Need Answered Before Applying

Do I have to be in arrears first?

Not necessarily. The important issue is whether I can service my existing credit obligations. Waiting until legal enforcement is advanced can reduce available options.

Will debt counselling reduce my monthly repayments?

A restructuring proposal can reduce scheduled instalments by changing the repayment structure. The exact outcome depends on my available income and credit agreements.

Does it cancel my arrears?

No. Debt counselling restructures existing debts; it does not automatically erase arrears or the capital balance.

Does all interest stop?

No automatic interest freeze should be assumed. I check how each balance will be treated under the final restructuring arrangement.

Can I take another loan during debt review?

NCR guidance states that consumers cannot apply for further ordinary credit while under debt counselling.

Who receives my monthly payment?

Creditor payments are distributed through an accredited Payment Distribution Agency rather than directly by the debt counsellor.

How do I verify the counsellor?

I use the National Credit Regulator's official Register of Registrants and check the counsellor's NCR registration details.

Debt Counselling Is Useful When My Existing Repayments No Longer Fit My Income

I use formal debt counselling when the underlying problem is over-indebtedness rather than one temporary missed payment. I verify the counsellor, disclose the full budget, understand the fees, monitor PDA distributions and continue following the restructuring plan until the applicable debts and clearance requirements have been dealt with.
